AL: "Rip Van Winkle"- Comic Tale?

Above all, "Rip Van Winkle" is regarded as a comic tale. Do you, as a 21st century reader, find the story humourous, or do you think it's too outdated to be funny to us today? Explain your response.

  1. In my opinion, I believe the story is too outdated to be considered funny today. In our time, humour is usually used in a crude way. The story would make many readers think that it was some simple fairy tale and a few would relate it to the American Revolution. It may be funny to a very few readers because it relates to that time period. Humour back then is much different than today, stories develop with fad. If there is a new influence in the world, many can't help but go with it. Notice that I said many, not everyone is influenced by a single thing.

  2. I would have to say that as a 21st century reader this tale is not humorous. It may have been written as something funny a long time ago, but the humor that is displayed in the writing is dry and very boring in my opinion. I believe the language that was used made it hard to understand overall. Also the way the time period or the way of is portrayed differently and is hard to relate to. Its hard to put ourselves back into that time so we can understand it because we have never really experienced anything like it. Therefore I think that this story is definatly outdated.

  3. I think this is too outdated to be funny to us today. Because first it is boring and not funny. Not much people read comic this days. We mostly use tv or the media as a humourous thing. Fairy tale or in books are way to out dated for us. But for me, thats what i say.

  4. I think some pieces of the story are funny, however most of the humor is outdated for todays culture. Many students that might read the story may not pick up the humor.

  6. I didn't find it funny, but I didn't really read it... but of what I did read it was boring and not funny and it was pretty out-dated and it was too descriptive of the scenery hahahahaha

  7. I guess nowadays there is plenty of variety considered "humorous", but even in the time period that this story was written I can't imagine people finding it comical. Back then divorces weren't 50-60% expected out of all marriages like it is these days therefore I would be surprised seeing people joke about what seemed to use to be a serious subject.

  8. Personally, I don't think the story is humorous. I think that the story is a classic tall tale, and it is a very enjoyable read. But I didnt think it was humorous. It may easily be funny to someone back in the day; comedy and humor has changed so much over time. from old vadville(just silly slapstick humor) to todays more crude and innapropriate humor.

  9. I think it has a couple places that are slightly comical in nature. Alot of the story is just leading on from his past and the only funny parts i found in the text were: When he went out into the woods and ended up getting drunk with complete strangers and passing out. Also when he was riping on his wife Dan by calling her shrew and such.

  10. I think that there are very few places in this story that are humorous, most things are out of date. The people in our time period are much more rash with their humor. I understood and caught all of the intended humor, I just didn't think that it was very funny. The thought that went through my head was "Ok... I guess that could be considered somewhat funny..." I appreciated the story behind the plot, the Revolutionary War, because that point in American history will be forever preserved in Rip Van Winkle.

  11. I agree with what Karli said.

Not only is the story not funny now, I don't see why it would be funny back then, especially since hardly anyone at that time would divorce. There were probably quite a bit of people in an unhappy marriage, and I don't find things that make a joke out of my issues to be funny. I wouldn't expect people to be like that back then either. So I don't find this story comical; rather I'm surprised to find out that it was intended to be. It is definitely outdated in terms of humor.

  12. I do think this story is to outdated to be funny to the modern reader. It's more of a fairy tale, which I think most would say aren't that humorous. Also the story is about a man running away form his horrid, nagging wife. That's not really comical in my opinion.

  13. I agree with linette. I don't think some fairy tale is funny. It's just the thing to enjoy. Yes crude humor is funny at our time now. Also sexual humor is really funny too. A lot of movies this days are now like sexual like humor.

  14. I think that Angus is right. Now a days everyone is use to the media. But hey maybe if they make the story into a book and make sure its funny maybe poeple will try to read the book.

  15. Rip Van Winkle is way to outdated to be funny. It has many good points to the story but is not humorous at all. This story is just showing how a man left his family for awhile and returned finding everything different. His wife accused him of many things, which didnt come to be humor but wrong in a way. And him coming back after 20 years finding his family whos life's changed dramaticaly, and his wife dead had some impact on Rip. So I believe no humor was represented in this story.

  16. I didn't really read the story but heard a lot about in class and I think it is a little out of date. Humor today is something a little disgusting or rude to someone else not really oh look who fell asleep for 20 years or so. Although the story wasn't boring either. I think this was probably the best story that we read in my opinion. But I didn't really find it funny but it wasn't really something boring like The Crucible or something.
