AL: "Rip Van Winkle" and Battle of the Sexes

Dame Van Winkle is portrayed very poorly. Rip is referred to as a "hen-pecked husband," amongst other things. He always wants to escape her wrath. There seems to be a battle: Rip vs Dame. What movie, television show, or song portrays women in this light or has this same type of battle of the sexes? Clearly explain the comparison.

Additionally, do you think that our society has a double standard for men and women? Watch this YouTube video to see how society views Dame Van Winkle. Is this fair?

  1. Yes I believe america does have a double standard for men and women. Men believe they should be the ones to bring the bread to the the dinner table and believe that women should be at home with the kids. I do not think this is good thinking and I believe that in the up coming years, we as a nation should try to move away from the double standard between men and women.

  2. Michael T,

I'm not completly sure with your analogy of bread being brought to the table, however, you do raise a valid point about women having to stay home. In the past, they have been looked at as having to stay home with the kids, cook, and clean. However, times have changed now. I think that people don't look at women the same way that they did back then. They're expected to go out and make a living now, just as well as men.

  3. I agree with Michael. In the past, men and women have been portrayed with different jobs and responsibilities. I believe that men and women should share both jobs and responsibilities.

  4. Rip Van Winkle was written long before now. The way Dame van Winkle is portrayed is clearly outdated. These days, most families have double incomes- the wife and husband are both employed. The amount of money women are making in comparison to men is as close as it has ever been to equal...

  5. Times have changed Zachary D. However I still think america has a whole could work harder on changing the theory that men should be the only ones working and birnging in the money to the household.

  6. I agree with Michael T. But evidently things have change and people don't veiw things that way anymore. Most familys' have both husband and wife employed. Bringing in double the salary.

  7. The simpsons portrays this nicely. Homer is a lazy, basically do nothing husband, and his wife Marge is a huge nagger, and typical house-wife.

  8. i agree on the double standard on Men and Woman. And I agree that Dan VanWinkle is prtaited as a shrew woman that is fairly mean to Rip. But on the other hand of that is the fact that Rip V.W. does nothing for his family he doesn't take care of his kids or his land and doesn't help his wife out with anything.

  10. The show American Dad is portrays this also
the Dad a C.I.A. agent brings home the money while his wife stays home to nagg and clean while the kids are negleted and left to rome free

The double standards of society today are like the trends of clothing. One year men are suppose to bring home the checks, next year its the wife, then both. Due to this the double standers of society today can be based off of a trend cycle and the those who fallow it or not

  11. I agree with ryan. Simpsons totally portray the story of Rip Van Winkle. Homer does a lot of bad things and Marge always brag and complain on what he have done.

  12. It is true. Lots of times the women will take away the fun from a man. Yeah lots of times the women are fun but sometimes they are not the fun that the men seek. But the only show that portrays this is the Simpsons becuase Homer does things and his wife is always nagging at him.

  13. I think Fabian has a positive understanding of battle of the sexes, and he is right. There are many times when a women holds back a man from doing what he wants to do. Women can be ammusing and fun at times, but can make a man very angry. Fabian picked a good show that represented that, and that was the Simpsons. Because Homer never gets any space for his self. And when he does do something, he gets nagged at by his wife.

  14. When using a word such as "however" in the context where an adjective clause should be used, punctuate the word like this... ;however,... Here is an example sentence.... I like chicken;however, I prefer beef. This comment is for Zachary D. :)
